Cath Brophy begann mit dieser Serie im März 2020, als die Schweiz aufgrund der Covid-19-Pandemie in einen Lockdown versetzt wurde. Sie beschloss, von zu Hause aus zu arbeiten, um die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel zu ihrem Atelier zu vermeiden.

Diese neue Situation hatte einen bedeutenden Einfluss auf das Format ihrer Arbeit. Während sie in ihrem Atelier großformatige Papierinstallationen herstellte, wurde sie zu Hause durch den Platz und die Ausrüstung eingeschränkt und begann, an kleinformatigen Collagen zu arbeiten. Sie definiert diese Massstabsverschiebung als eine "Destillation ihrer Arbeit", bei der sie ihre Arbeit auf das Wesentliche reduzierte, d. h. sie konzentrierte sich auf Collagen mit wenigen Elementen.

Zu Hause setzte sie ihre künstlerische Forschung über die Form des Bogens fort, ein Motiv, das sie zuvor in großformatigen Kompositionen erforscht hatte. Die geometrische Form des Bogens stellt sowohl einen physischen als auch einen metaphorischen Durchgang dar.

In diesen Collagen kombiniert sie Schichten verschiedener Formen und Farben, um die Form des Bogens mehrdeutig zu erkunden. Während eine Form eine 3D-Ansicht eines Bogens wiedergibt, stört eine andere diese Vision mit einer flachen geometrischen Form. Mit diesem 'push and pull' der Wahrnehmung erzeugt Cath Brophy eine unruhige und faszinierende ästhetische Spannung.

Der Titel der Serie "The Only Way Out is Through" bezieht sich nicht nur auf ihren künstlerischen Prozess, kompositorische Herausforderungen zu lösen, sondern auch auf den Kontext der Pandemie, mit der wir konfrontiert sind.

‘The Only Way Out is Through’, 2020, series of mixed media collages with paper, charcoal and pastel

Cath Brophy started this series in March 2020, when Switzerland was placed in lockdown due to the Covid 19 pandemic. She decided to work from home to avoid public transport to her studio.

This new situation had a significant impact on the format of her work. While she was making large-scale paper installations in her studio, she was constrained by space and equipment at home and began working on small-scale collages. She defines this shift in scale as a "distillation of her work", where she reduced her work to the essentials, i.e. she concentrated on collages with few elements.

At home, she continued her artistic research on the shape of the arch, a motif she had previously explored in large-scale compositions. The geometric shape of the arch represents both a physical and a metaphorical passage.

In these collages, she combines layers of different shapes and colours to ambiguously explore the shape of the arch. While one shape renders a 3D view of an arch, another disrupts this vision with a flat geometric shape. With this 'push and pull' of perception, Cath Brophy creates a restless and intriguing aesthetic tension.

The title of the series, The Only Way Out is Through, refers not only to her artistic process of solving compositional challenges, but also to the context of the pandemic we face.

Cath Brophy a commencé cette série en mars 2020, lorsque la Suisse a été placée en situation de lockdown en raison de la pandémie de Covid-19. Elle a décidé de travailler depuis chez elle afin d'éviter les transports en commun pour se rendre à son atelier.

Cette nouvelle situation a eu un impact significatif sur le format de son travail. Alors qu'elle produisait des installations en papier de grand format dans son atelier, elle a été limitée chez elle par l'espace et l'équipement et a commencé à travailler sur des collages de petit format. Elle définit ce changement d'échelle comme une "distillation de son travail", où elle réduisait son travail à l'essentiel, c'est-à-dire qu'elle se concentrait sur des collages comportant peu d'éléments.

Chez elle, elle a poursuivi ses recherches artistiques sur la forme de l'arc, un motif qu'elle avait exploré auparavant dans des compositions de grand format. La forme géométrique de l'arc représente à la fois un passage physique et métaphorique.

Dans ces collages, elle combine des couches de formes et de couleurs différentes afin d'explorer la forme de l'arc de manière ambiguë. Alors qu'une forme reproduit une vision 3D d'un arc, une autre perturbe cette vision avec une forme géométrique plate. Avec ce 'push and pull' de la perception, Cath Brophy crée une tension esthétique agitée et fascinante.

Le titre de la série "The Only Way Out is Through" ne fait pas seulement référence à son processus artistique de résolution des défis de composition, mais aussi au contexte de la pandémie à laquelle nous sommes confrontés.
