Maricruz Peñaloza was born and raised in the south of Mexico and now lives and works in Zurich. She is an artist and curator for performance festivals and events on an international level. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and performance festivals at home and abroad. She has also curated, organised and co-organised numerous performance and art events at home and abroad. She is the founder and artistic director of the PERFORMANCE REIHE NEU-OERLIKON in Zurich and the Performance Open-Air St. Gallen, both festivals take place in public spaces. Peñaloza is the editor of substanz. performance art issues, fanzines on interviews, performances and everything to do with performance art.

Peñaloza is concerned both with public space as a political platform for what happens in a community and with migration issues, especially those of women who come to Mexico from Central America across the border in southern Mexico. All of this is linked to a critique of the different types of violence: "I work and move within a binary system: private and public," says Maricruz Peñaloza.
