"No-ëlle Berg - a woman and artist on her research walk along the lowlands of modern society. The Zurich artist does not want to endure, but to act. To expose social conditioning and reference culture with bold poses, experienced through the interactions of her professional and life fields, drive her. In her series "Where do i fit in?" the artist realizes five self-portraits in which she places herself in a confined space in her apartment: Dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, siphon and shoe cupboard. She creates powerful images in which she forces her body, like the objects in her apartment, to fit in. The artist is interested in the relationship between identity and categorization, and her series questions the tensions that arise during the attempt to categorize.
The work "Immer meer" was created in 2021. Berg sewed together several hundred masks to create a fabric sculpture that spans the room. The play on words in the title refers on the one hand to the visual similarity of the sculpture with the sea, on the other hand to the more waste that time brings with it. The mass of masks is meant to show how much of the mask goes to waste. It elevates this object of protection to an aesthetic art object and invites us to reflect on our own relationship to the mask.
Noëlle Berg is an artist who lives and works in Zurich. She exhibited her work at FATart Fair in both 2021 and 2020.
